Two more men have been arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder of Bhowanipore residents Ashok Shah and his wife Rashmita in their flat on June 6.
One of them has been arrested from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and another from Kendrapara in Odisha, police said.
Investigators said the two were in the Shahs’ house when the couple was murdered.
“The two arrested were directly involved in the killings inside the flat. The mastermind, who is a relative of the family, is yet to be apprehended,” said an officer.
The Shahs’ relative, who allegedly masterminded the crime, is still at large.
The police identified the arrested duo as Vishal Arora, originally from Liluah in Howrah, and Santosh Kumar Pati, alias Rahul, originally from Jajpur in Odisha but lived in Calcutta at Jinjirabazar.
“Arora was arrested in Mathura and Pati was picked up from Kendrapara,” the officer added.
With the fresh arrests, a total of five have been arrested in this case.
On the evening of June 6, one of the daughters of the slain couple who went to check on her parents when they were not responding to phone calls, found them murdered in their flat on Harish Mukherjee Road.
Earlier, the police had arrested Ratnakar Nath, Subodh Singh and Jatin Mehta — from Liluah, Howrah.
The three were allegedly brought for the “operation” by one of the family’s relatives whose brother had taken a loan of Rs 1 lakh from Shah and died before repaying it, passing on the responsibility to his elder brother.
Pati and Nath, both from Odisha’s Jajpur, knew one another, the police said.
