Eight men, including ‘directors’ of two alleged fake call centres in Sector V, were arrested after officers from the cyber crime police station in Salt Lake conducted raids early on Tuesday.
The arrested men, who were operating from two offices at Primarc Tower in DN Block, were allegedly duping foreigners, especially residents of the US, by posing as officials from software majors.
The police raided suite number 902 of the Primarc Tower and picked up three men. They next raided another office at suite number 909 and arrested five men.
A number of hard disks, sheets containing contact numbers of US residents and cellphones were seized from both offices.
“They would tell victims that their hard disk was about to crash or there was a bug in their system. They would offer to repair it and tell them to download a software,” said an officer.
Once the victims downloaded the software, the men would gain remote access to the devices and siphon off thousands of dollars when the victims went to the payment gateways to pay for the ‘repairs’, the officer said.
