A 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old girl died after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a minibus on Circular Garden Reach Road on Sunday afternoon.
Police said Mohammad Kalim, 20, a resident of Fatehpur Village Road in Garden Reach, was wearing a helmet. The woman Reshma Khatun, 19, was apparently without the headgear when the accident happened.
“The two-wheeler hit a minibus plying on the Metiabruz-Shyambazar route around 12.50pm while it was trying to overtake the bus from the right,” said an officer in Calcutta police’s traffic department.
“CCTV footage of the accident has been traced. It appears the two-wheeler was trying to overtake the bus from the right side and apparently collided with the bus and then lost balance.”
The two were flung off the vehicle and landed on the road. Both suffered critical injuries and were declared dead at SSKM Hospital. The police said the bus driver has been arrested.
“The two suffered multiple injuries. The man was wearing a helmet. We are examining the condition of the
road to check whether any external factors were responsible for the accident,” said an officer of West Port police station.
Another officer of the Port division said both vehicles were plying at a high speed. “It is advisable to drive safely and maintain a gap with other vehicles to avoid collisions,” the officer said.
The police said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
A case under IPC sections related to rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence has been started at West Port police station.
