Two booster pumping stations will be built at Jadavpur and Baghajatin to supply potable water to these areas that are now dependent on groundwater.

An official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said the construction of the two semi-underground reservoir-cum-booster pumping stations is likely to begin in January. Both have to be completed within 18 months.

The foundation stone of both will be laid later this month.

One of the stations will be built in Katjunagar, to the south of South City, along Prince Anwar Shah Road.

Mousumi Das, councillor of Ward 93 that covers Katjunagar, said iron content in the groundwater supplied to households is very high. Residents have to buy drinking water as the water quality is not fit for drinking, she said.

The KMC official said the station at Katjunagar, being built at a cost of Rs 6 crore, will have a 13,60,000-litre reservoir.

The other station will come up in Vidyasagar Colony in Baghajatin at a cost of Rs 4 crore. A 9,00,000-litre water reservoir will be built here.

Mitali Banerjee, councillor of Ward 99, which covers Vidyasagar Colony, said the groundwater was not fit for drinking.

“The water has a reddish colour. Residents had to buy drinking water. Besides, the KMC also supplied drinking water to these places dependent on groundwater,” she said.

The KMC official said the projects were planned to stop the supply of groundwater.

The official said water from the treatment plants will be stored in the reservoirs. The pumps will then push the water into the distribution network.

The pumping stations will increase the pressure and the flow of water and also take it to corners that face scarcity, said the official.
