Two men, who were allegedly running a call centre and duping people abroad by posing as officials of an Australian telecom company, have been arrested from a building in Lake Gardens in south Kolkata on Tuesday.
Police said, based on specific information, officers of the anti-rowdy squad of the detective department had raided a building on Lake Gardens Road and caught two persons who were present there.
An officer said these men were posing as the customer care executives of a Melbourne-based telecom company. They convinced people to download a software in their laptop or phone for making online payments. “Once the software is downloaded in a device, the fraudsters get access to the client’s device screen and can easily see their Internet banking details,” said the officer.
The Net banking details are then used for fraudulently transferring funds from the clients’ accounts to their own e-wallets or bank accounts.
Officers said there were at least two more youths involved in the same racket, who could not be arrested on Tuesday as they were not there during the time of the raid.
