A 35-year-old woman who was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her daughter died after a truck hit the two-wheeler on APC Road on Saturday night.
Police said Arpita Addya, the victim, was a resident of Beniapukur Road.
The bike was being driven by her husband, Bidyut Kumar Addya, 41. Arpita was on the pillion with the couple's 13-year-old daughter, Akriti.
"All three were taken to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where Arpita died. Bidyut and Akriti were discharged after treatment," said an officer at Burtolla police station.
The police said the couple and their daughter were travelling through APC Road around 11.45pm on Saturday when the accident happened.
“The husband and the wife were wearing helmets, but the child was without a headgear. The wife suffered critical injuries,” the officer said.
The truck was impounded but the driver managed to flee.
The police said efforts were being made to arrest the driver. A case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code has been started.
“We are trying to ascertain the sequence of the events leading to the accident. Statements of the husband of the deceased and her daughter will be recorded. We are also in the process of checking footage of CCTV cameras installed near the accident spot,” said an officer of the traffic department.
According to the rule, a two-wheeler cannot have more than one pillion rider and all riders must wear helmets.
