A 26-year-old man riding pillion on a motorcycle died after a truck allegedly hit the two-wheeler near Chingrighata crossing on the eastern fringes of Kolkata on Tuesday morning.
Police said Sagar Pal, who was wearing a helmet, was flung off the bike as the two-wheeler lost balance and crashed.
Pal’s helmet came off because of the impact of the collision. His head had directly hit the pavement causing serious injuries, the police said. He was declared dead at Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital.
People in the neighbourhood said cops took Pal to the hospital in an autorickshaw after an alleged delay.
The accident happened around 6am near the under-construction Metro railway site off Chingrighata.
The police said the accident happened on the Salt Lake-bound road at a turning where the road is slightly narrow because of the Metro construction work.
Pal’s friend Soham Konar, a resident of Anandapur, was riding the bike. The deceased was a resident of Kasba.
Konar has been admitted to the hospital with injuries, an officer in Bidhannagar police said.
The two were heading for their workplace at Infinity Hub in Srijan Park, Salt Lake, when the accident took place.
Officers of Bidhannagar South police station seized the two-wheeler.
The police said they were analysing CCTV footage from the camera closest to the spot to identify the vehicle that hit the motorcycle.
An officer said a number of goods vehicles had crossed the stretch around the time of the accident.
“We are trying to track down the offending vehicle,” said the officer.
The truck was yet to be identified till Tuesday evening.
