Garai was found dead outside room No. 419, the police said.

“The death appears to be because of a fall from height. It could be suicide. A case of unnatural death has been drawn up with Park Street police station. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said an officer of the south division of Kolkata police.

“The family members of the deceased have been informed. We will talk to them to find out more about Garai.”

The police said they received information a little after 5am that someone had fallen from a height inside the MLA hostel on Kyd Street, a heavily guarded premises off Park Street.

A team from Park Street police station reached the spot and found the police constable lying in a pool of blood with his arms spread.

Garai, who was allotted a room on the hostel’s third floor with an attached balcony, was rushed to the National Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.

“We will go through the visitor’s book and scan CCTV footage to identify everyone who visited the hostel in the past 24 hours and speak to them as part of the probe,” the officer said.

“We will also speak to some of Garai’s colleagues to find out whether he had been suffering from any anxiety.”

Senior officials at the hostel said MLA Saren was sleeping in his room when the constable was spotted.

“The member was lodged in a room adjoining that of his guard,” an official said.

Several calls to the MLA went unanswered.
