Chakraborty was engaged as a peon to the personal assistant of the state transport secretary, the police said.

Complainant Supriya Manna, a resident of Tollygunge Road in south Kolkata, had alleged that she had paid Rs 7 lakh to Chakraborty for jobs for her son Aritra and niece Barnali Khan in the transport department in 2016.

“Chakraborty had provided the family fake appointment letters to win their trust. It was only when the candidates went to join duty that they realised that they had been cheated,” one of the investigators said.

“Chakraborty cheated other job aspirants too,” said an officer.

The accused has been remanded in police custody.
