Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a march through Chittaranjan Avenue, from near Jorasanko Thakurbari to Red Road, on Thursday afternoon to celebrate Unesco’s inclusion of Kolkata’s Durga Puja on its list of “intangible cultural heritage”.
The march will start at 2pm.
There are apprehensions that the rally — to be joined by Durga Puja organisers and around 10,000 students, among others — may choke central Kolkata roads.

What: Police said Durga Puja organisers from across Kolkata, Howrah and Bidhannagar, sports and television personalities, women beneficaries of the Lakshmir Bhandar and Anandadhara schemes and around 10,000 school students will gather in front of Jorasanko Thakurbari by 2pm on Thursday. The chief minister will lead the rally from Jorasanko Thakurbari to Red Road, through the south-bound flank of Chittaranjan Avenue.
When: The rally will start at 2pm and is expected to cover a distance of 5km in one hour.
Rally ends at: Red Road
Red Road: The artery will be closed to traffic from 11am on Thursday and reopened after the event gets over in the afternoon.
Traffic disruption: Vehicular traffic will be stopped on the south-bound flank of Chittaranjan Avenue, between the crossing leading to Jorasanko Thakurbari and Jawaharlal Nehru Road, when the rally proceeds towards Red Road. Movement of vehicles on Bhupen Bose Avenue, Jatindra Mohan Avenue, Chittaranjan Avenue, Vivekananda Road, Kali Krishna Tagore Street, Mahatma Gandhi Road, BB Ganguly Street, Ganesh Chandra Avenue, SN Banerjee Road, Lenin Sarani, Outram Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Rani Rashmoni Avenue, Hospital Road, Lover’s Lane, Kidderpore Road and Esplanade Row (East) will be restricted on Thursday afternoon till the rally passes.
No parking: Vehicles will not be allowed to park on the south-bound flank of Chittaranjan Avenue till the rally is over.
