Local trains disrupted

Day 1 of a 48-hour nationwide strike, called by the joint forum of central trade unions to protest the Union government's policies affecting workers, saw disruptions in local train services. Strike supporters from Left-backed organisations squatted on the railway tracks at several areas, including Jadavpur and Belgharia stations. At most places, the blockade was lifted after police intervention. In the Howrah-Bardhaman section, a group of people demonstrated at Chinsurah and Serampore stations. “The demonstrations led to delays. But trains were not cancelled. There was no effect on long-distance trains,” said the spokesperson of Eastern Railway.
