Three young girls, including one who was an aspiring model and another who wanted to become an air hostess, have committed suicide at Haridevpur and Bansdroni on the southern fringes of the city, police said.

Mamon Das, 17, a Class XI student, allegedly consumed sleeping pills on Saturday apparently after her family failed to arrange books for a course she had enrolled in to become an air hostess.

The police said Mamon, a resident of Nabapally in Haridevpur, had consumed the sleeping pills while she was sitting beside a temple, from where she had video-called her brother saying she was ending her life.

Her family had launched a search for her and found her lying unconscious next to the temple. She was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where she was declared dead, the police said.

“She did not leave behind any suicide note, but we learned from family members that she wanted to become an air hostess. But her family could not afford the books required for the course and apparently she was very unhappy,” said an officer of Haridevpur police station.

On Sunday morning, 19-year-old Puja Sarkar, a resident of Bansdroni, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room early on Sunday. The police said Puja, who stayed in a paying guest accommodation, was taken to MR Bangur Hospital, where she was declared dead. “She was a first-year college student and was aspiring to be a model. We learnt from her room-mate that she used to get small modelling assignments and wanted to build a career in modelling,” said an officer.

Puja, from North 24-Parganas district, reportedly had an altercation with a friend with whom she went out on Saturday, after which she locked herself in her room, the police said to have learned from her room-mate. She did not leave any suicide note, the police said.

Also on Friday, Puja Kundu, 20, a second-year college student was found unconscious in her bed at her home in Haridevpur on Friday. She was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where she was declared dead. The police said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

“There is no specific complaint from the families of any of the victims. Cases of unnatural deaths have been started in the respective police stations,” an officer at Lalbazar said.
