Three killed in road accidents

The investigation into all three crashes has been taken over by the fatal squad of the traffic police

Three persons died in as many road accidents in the city between Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

A 58-year-old homemaker riding pillion on her husband’s two-wheeler died after being hit by a truck on Maniktala Main Road, at the Kankurgachi crossing, on Sunday night.

The other two accidents, which occurred on Vivekananda Road and off EM Bypass on Monday morning, claimed the lives of a 55-year-old pedestrian and a 65-year-old bicyclist.

Manju Basu, 58, and husband Debiprasad Basu, 71, residents of Gagan Sarkar Road in Beleghata, were riding a scooter when they were hit by a truck on Sunday night.

Manju, who was riding pillion, suffered multiple injuries and died at the NRS Medical College and Hospital. Her husband, who also suffered serious injuries, has been admitted to a private hospital in Salt Lake.

Officers of Phoolbagan police station impounded the vehicle but the driver fled. The police said the couple had their helmets on.

On Monday, 55-year-old pedestrian Shambhu Jaiswal was hit by a bus around 10.50am on Vivekananda Road. “Jaiswal was taken to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead,” said an officer.

Jaiswal was a resident of Chalta Bagan Lane. Officers of Amherst Street police station seized the bus but the driver fled, the police said.

Around 7.30am, Shankar Roy, 65, was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a vehicle near Arupota, in the interiors of the Pragati Maidan area off EM Bypass.

Roy, a resident of Entally, was taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he died an hour later.

The police said CCTV footage is being analysed to identify the vehicle that hit Roy.
