Three teachers from Bengal have received the Indian National Science Academy award for teachers this year.
The three recipients are Upendranath Nandi, an associate professor of physics at Scottish Church College, Prasanta Sahoo, a professor of mechanical engineering at Jadavpur University, and Pranab Sarkar, a professor of chemistry at Visva Bharati University. They feature among the 15 who have been conferred the award across the country.
The INSA Teachers Award carries a scroll, cash award of Rs 50,000 and book grant of Rs 20,000.
An official of the education department said although INSA Teacherh the incumbent had to apply on his or her, the institute authority had to compulsorily recommend the case.
Supratim Das, the vice-principal of Scottish Church College, said the name of Upendranath Nandi was recommended as students feedback over the years has suggested that his understanding of the subject was highly admirable and he had always inspired students to think beyond their syllabus. “The award will motivate me to keep promoting the scientific temper among students,” said Nandi.
An official of Jadavpur University the award is a recognition of the efforts Sahoo has put in to familiarise students with the trends of modern research.
Debdeep Mukhopadhyay, a teacher of IIT Kharagpur, last month received Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in engineering science.
