Three persons were arrested on Saturday night for alleged theft of a suitcase belonging to MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, police said. The suitcase is yet to be recovered.

Officers at Lalbazar said Bandopadhyay was in Mumbai to attend a conference of the Bureau of Indian Standards from April 27 to April 30.

“The MP had taken a flight back to Kolkata. He had booked his suitcase with a courier company that had loaded it on the Jnaneswari Express, which runs between Mumbai and Shalimar station in Bengal,” said an officer.

The suitcase was scheduled to reach Shalimar on May 4. But it did not, prompting Banerjee to lodge a complaint with Kolkata police.

Sources said the city police contacted Mumbai police and checked the CCTV footage at the station in Mumbai from where the Howrah-bound Jnaneswari Express started its journey for Bengal.

“The footage showed the suitcase being loaded onto the train. But when the train reached Shalimar station, the suitcase was not found on the train,” said the officer.

The police questioned officials of the courier company that was to receive the consignment at Shalimar station.

“The clearing agents failed to give any logical explanation why the suitcase was missing. The agents — Debanjan Sen, Guddu Singh and Ankit Singh — have been arrested,” the officer said.
