The deceased — Ayush Jhulka — lived on the footpath close to Rafi Ahmed Dental College near Sealdah flyover in central Kolkata, not far from the place where his body was found.

Deputy commissioner (central) Rupesh Kumar said the police received an alert on 100 on Monday morning about a man lying unconscious on the footpath with blood oozing from his mouth and nose.

The man, who apparently had no external injury marks but was bleeding from his mouth and nose, was taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Initially, an unnatural death case was started.

The post-mortem report says there were signs of internal injuries and that the death was caused by excessive bleeding from those injuries, an officer said.

Officers of Muchipara police station said that based on the post-mortem findings, a murder case has been started.

“The names of a few people emerged during the investigation. One of them is Alok Chakraborty, who runs an eatery on the footpath where Jhulka lived. Based on a complaint, we arrested him and two other men — Ajay Das, 40, and Jayanta Bhuiya, 39 — for being responsible for the fatal attack on the victim,” an officer said.

All three were produced in a city court and have been remanded in police custody till February 15.
