A 17-year-old boy riding a scooter died after being hit by a bus on Aurobinda Sarani in north Kolkata’s Burtolla on Friday afternoon.

Karan Ram was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Ram, who stayed with his grandmother, was hit by a bus on route 217A that plies between Narayanpur in North 24-Parganas and Babughat.

He was taken to RG Kar hospital, where he was declared dead.

A case of causing death due to negligence has been started against the bus driver. The investigation has been transferred to the fatal squad of the traffic police. People aged 16 or older are eligible for a driving licence for a two-wheeler.

“We are trying to get more details about the deceased from his family. It is not clear if he had a driving license,” said an officer of the traffic department.
