A 16-year-old boy riding pillion to his friend on a motorcycle died in a crash as the two-wheeler rammed into the rear of a truck at a high speed, allegedly after jumping a signal on Red Road early on Thursday morning.
Munu Das, 16, a resident of Akra’s Dhan Kheti Lane near Science City and his friend Imraz Khan, 16, also from the same neighbourhood were returning home when the accident happened around 1.12am.
Munu, who was riding pillion, was flung off the vehicle and had landed on the road a few meters away while Imraz had also toppled with the bike.
Both were taken to SSKM hospital where Munu was declared dead and Imraz was admitted with multiple injuries.
A senior officer said CCTV footage of the stretch showed that the two-wheeler was moving at a high speed and had jumped a signal before crashing into the truck. Both were not wearing helmets.
According to the rule, anyone having attained the age of 16 years is eligible to drive a moped or gearless two-wheeler at a stipulated speed. For this, one needs to get a provisional driving licence that will be in effect till the age of 18 years when a fresh driving licence has to be obtained.
However, in this case, the police said they were yet to find if Imraz had a valid driving licence.
The police officers attached with the traffic department said the majority of the accidents involving two-wheelers that were reported in the city were because of the failure to negotiate with speed, especially on empty stretches.
