An 18-year-old girl who came to Kolkata from Bihar for treatment was found dead with her throat slashed in an abandoned shanty near Sealdah in central Kolkata on Monday.

Police on Tuesday said she had been murdered and that they were looking for three persons who had come to the city from Bihar, apparently trailing her. A preliminary inquiry revealed that the complainant, Chittaranjan Kumar, 19, had come to Kolkata with the victim, Anjali Kumari, on Monday for her treatment.

“It appears Kumar’s marriage had been fixed with the widow of his brother. But when he came to Kolkata with this girl, his sister-in-law’s family allegedly suspected that he would not marry the sister-in-law,” said an officer.

Kamalgazi bottling plant partially reopens

An aerated drink bottling plant in Kamalgazi on the southern fringes of Kolkata where a suspected ammonia gas leak had been reported on Monday partially reopened on Tuesday. All operations in the plant had been shut down around 4pm on Monday and 40 of its employees were evacuated.

Around 11am on Tuesday, representatives from the fire department, Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality and police inspected the plant. “The unit that handles mineral water was cleared for resumption of work,” said a team member. “The other one, from where gas had leaked, needs some repairs.”
