A young woman has lodged a complaint alleging that she was being stalked by a man she had met on social media a few months ago.
Based on her complaint, police arrested S. Singh, 27, a resident of Tangra, in front of her office on Sarat Bose Road on Saturday evening.
An officer in the Kolkata police’s south division said the woman lodged a complaint with Bhowanipore police station on Saturday alleging that the accused had been stalking him on social media as well as in person.
“She has written in her complaint that S. Singh, whom she came in touch with through Facebook and Instagram, was calling her up again and again against her requests. Last week, he allegedly landed up in her office and started looking for her. He created a scene in her office and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not renew her friendship with him,” the officer said.
Following this, the woman in her early 20s got in touch with the police.
Sources said the police asked the woman to call him up and tell him to visit her office on Saturday. She did as told.
A cop team was waiting for Singh in front of the office. The man arrived but before he could enter the office, he was rounded up.
He has been charged under IPC sections related to stalking, criminal intimidation and outraging a woman’s modesty with words and gestures.
The police said Singh came to know about the woman’s office from her Facebook profile.
“We always advise netizens against posting their personal details on social media. A simple post about your location would let thieves know that you are away from home,” the officer said.
