The Class XI student who came under an uprooted gulmohar tree in Jodhpur Park on Thursday morning underwent surgery on Friday.

Siddhartha Mandal, 18, was returning home on scooter with medicines for his younger brother when the huge tree crashed on him. He fractured his right leg at multiple points and also suffered head injuries.

His parents said an iron plate was inserted in his leg. “The operation was successful. But he would need to take rest for a few months,” said father Sanjay Mandal.

Mother Annapurna said Siddhartha had been crying with pain since the accident. “Doctors gave him medicines to reduce the pain. But then he started crying thinking about his exams,” she said.

The tree that had crashed will not be replaced with another gulmohar tree, said local councilor Mousumi Das. “We will plant a neem tree because that will be more safe,” she said.
