Bidhannagar Subdivisional Hospital has recorded a first in its history. On Wednesday, the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy (a surgical procedure to remove gallbladder) was done successfully at the hospital.
“Such a modern surgery is a rarity at a subdivisional hospital level anywhere in the state,” said hospital superintendent Partha Pratim Guha. The equipment was procured last June. The operation theatre reopened in November after repairs.
The free-of-cost surgery was completed in 15 minutes by a four-member team led by Dr Partha Sarathi Naskar, who got trained in the technique last year. The beneficiary was a 37-year-old woman from IB Block. While an open surgery would have entailed a cut between 6cm to 12cm in length, the microsurgery needed two pores each of 10mm and 5mm diameter, Naskar said, thus reducing recovery time.
