A spell of rain and thunder on Sunday is likely to arrest the rise in Celsius in the city, but only for a brief period.

Rain gone, the mercury will rise steadily again, said a Met official.

The minimum and maximum temperatures on Thursday were 16.5 degrees and 27.7 degrees, respectively. Both were below what is usual for mid-February.

Around last weekend, the minimum temperature had been hovering between 13 and 14 degrees.

By the weekend, the maximum temperature is likely to be close to 30 degrees and the minimum temperature around 18.5 degrees, both normal for this time of the year, according to Met officials.

The city is likely to get a brief spell of “thunderstorm activity” on Sunday.

“A cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and a high-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal are likely to trigger light rain and thunder in Kolkata,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.
