A bus carrying a few students and employees of a private management institute apparently spun out of control and rammed into the median divider on EM Bypass and landed on the opposite flank in Sukantanagar around 3.30am on Friday.
The bus, which was moving from the direction of Science City towards Chingrighata, finally came to a halt after crashing into a roadside hut.
Police said the driver of the bus and 10 passengers were injured. Three of them were admitted to hospital. “Among the passengers were students and trainees aged between 19 and 21 years,” an officer said.
There was almost no traffic on the road at the time of the crash, the police said.
The bus was seized by officers of Bidhannagar South police station and a case of rash and negligent driving and causing grievous hurt by an act of rash and negligent manner has been started against the bus driver.
“The bus broke the median divider of EM Bypass, entered the Kolkata-bound flank and damaged the railing on the Sukantanagar side and then crashed into a hut,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar police.
The Kolkata-bound flank was cleared by 4.30am with the help of cranes that removed the bus, the police said.
“There was a very loud crash, followed by screams. The driver was badly injured. Some of the passengers were injured, too. They were rescued by the police and taken to hospital,” said a resident of the area who saw the accident.
A senior police officer said the bus had been impounded and would undergo a mechanical test, which will help the investigators find out whether any glitch had caused the accident.
