A second-year-student of physiotherapy at the National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities, a facility for physically challenged people in the northern suburbs of Kolkata, was found hanging in his hostel room on Monday night.
Priyaranjan, 22, who was originally from Gaya district of Bihar, was found hanging on Monday night. He was declared dead at Sagore Dutta hospital.
The institution trains students to provide services to orthopaedically handicapped patients through physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vocational counselling and rehabilitation.
Police said Priyaranjan’sfamily on Tuesday lodged a complaint with Baranagar police station of abetment to suicide against some students of the institute bringing charges of ragging against them.
The National Institute of of Locomotor Disabilities is an autonomous body under the Centre’s ministry of social justice and empowerment, where students from across the country come to study.
Priyaranjan, one of his seniors in the institute said, was in his room around 11.30pm when his roommate returned from the rehearsals for a freshers’ programme.
“Priyaranjan’s roommate found the door locked. Initially, he thought Priyaranjan had fallen asleep but when he did not respond to phone calls, someone used a torch to see through an open window and found him hanging,” said a third-year student of the same institute.
The door was broken open and Priyaranjan was taken to Sagore Dutta hospital where he was declared dead.
Some of the seniors and friends of the deceased said Priyaranjan was still alive when he was taken out of his room but passed away on the way to the hospital because of an alleged delay in arranging an ambulance.
“We took him to the hospital on a motorbike. Priyaranjan was made to seat between the rider and the pillion. But by the time we reached the hospital, he had expired,” said one of the students.
Students said there are around 350 student-boarders in the hostel at present.
The police said they have found a purported suicide note in possession of the deceased in which he apologised to his parents and elder brother for committing suicide.
“Sorry Mummy Papa Bhaiya...,” was mentioned as the first line of the purported note.
Police said they would send the suicide note for forensic tests.
The family of the deceased came to Kolkata on Tuesday.
