A student of the Satyajit Ray Film and Technology Institute (SRFTI) died while swimming in a pond on the Bypass campus in east Kolkata on Friday morning, police said.
Vishal Mohanlal Gautam, 29, from Jalalpur in Gujarat and a student of the fourth batch of electronic digital media, drowned around 9.30am, said an officer at Panchasayar police station.
Some staff members of the institute lifted Vishal out of the water and took him to a private hospital nearby, where he was declared dead, the police said.
The police said a student standing near the pond spotted Vishal getting drowned.
“The student, who was standing close to the pond where Vishal was swimming, raised the alarm seeing him drown. Some of our staff members who were nearby rushed to the spot and jumped into the pond to rescue Vishal,” said an official of the institute.
“Vishal’s elder brother has reached the campus. His parents will arrive late on Friday. We have not received any complaint till now,” an officer said.
The police were trying to find out whether Vishal had any medical condition that could have triggered the accident.
