The state health department on Monday directed the heads of all departments of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata to draw up a list of interns and postgraduate trainees who are on a strike and send it to the medical superintendent.
The interns and trainees will be marked “absent” while preparing a fresh roster of doctors to ensure that services were not hampered at the hospital.
Junior doctors at the hospital have been on a strike for a fortnight demanding the removal of the principal.
“If necessary, disciplinary action may be taken against those who have remained absent from hospital duty,” said an official at Swasthya Bhavan.
“Health is an emergency service. Any act of indiscipline in rendering services to patients will not be tolerated."
On Monday, the health secretary and the director of medical education met five representatives of the medical college, who are also members of a mentor group set up to resolve the impasse.
Officials said the government was open to dialogue but not at the cost of services to patients.Representatives of the medical college were asked to inform the agitating doctors about the pandemic rules that bars doctors from going on strike.
“All senior doctors and department heads will talk to the absentees and try to find a way to resolve the crisis,” the official said.
