A 45-year-old homemaker, who was alone in her Garfa apartment, was allegedly robbed of her jewellery and money by a man who barged into the house once she answered the door on Friday, police said.
Shivani Karmakar was alone at home on South Purbachal Hospital Road when the calling bell of her house rang around 11am.
On opening the door, a man she said unknown to her barged in and threatened her with a knife.
Her husband Samar Karmakar, who is a civil contractor, was not home.
“According to the woman’s statement, an unknown person entered the flat with a knife in hand and demanded that she hand over valuables. He snatched her gold chain and gold ring,” said joint commissioner (crime) Sankha Shubhra Chakrabarty.
The man allegedly tied the hands and feet of the woman with plastic straps and confined her in the washroom, the police said.
The police said the house was ransacked.
According to the complaint lodged by the family, apart from snatching Shivani’s ornaments, the man took away Rs 30,000 and four gold rings that were kept in an unlocked drawer attached to a table in one of the bedrooms.
The man bolted the washroom door and the main door of the house before fleeing.
“The woman was locked inside the washroom. Her screams for help alerted neighbours, who came and rescued her,” Chakrabarty said.
The neighbourhood is lined with apartments and standalone houses.
Investigators said they were trying to collect CCTV footage from the cameras located close to the building.
