The city prayed for rain in the weekend. Saturday was dry in the city but the wrath of the sun was missing.

The Met office has predicted a rainy spell, starting Sunday.

“A cyclonic circulation is active over Uttar Pradesh. It is expected to move eastwards to Jharkhand in the coming days,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.

“Thunderstorms are likely in Kolkata and rest of south Bengal from Sunday. The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong gusts of wind,” he said.

But a cloudy sky since morning can be detrimental to the possibility of thunderstorms.

“Some heating is required in the first half of Sunday for thunderstorms in the evening. A cloudy sky since morning is not ideal,” said a Met official.

Friday was consistently cloudy and breezy but there was hardly any rain in Kolkata. The clouds dragged the Celsius down, breaking the heat wave that had gripped Kolkata and most parts of Bengal.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata was around 37 degrees, a slight dip from the day before.

Purulia and some adjoining areas saw some thunderstorms on Saturday. But the intensity was missing.

The temperature in the districts were also moderate on Saturday.

Bankura, where the mercury, had been breaching the 44 degrees Celsius mark, saw a maximum of 38 degrees on Saturday.
