Thunderstorms are “very likely” in Kolkata on Sunday and Monday, according to the Met office.

On Friday, the Met office issued an “enhanced thunderstorm” alert for Bengal from Saturday to May 3, the forecast prompted by a significant increase in moisture incursion from the Bay.

On Saturday, districts like Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia were among those that got rain and gusts of wind, said an official of the Met department.

Saturday was hot and sunny in Kolkata till early afternoon.

The maximum temperature was around 37 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal.

But gradually, clouds started taking over the sky

The sky looked ominous around 2.30pm. But the rain that followed did not live up to the billing.

There were drizzles fora short while in several places in the city like Garia-hat, Kalighat and Camac Street.

The late afternoon and the rest of the evening were breezy. The clouds and winds made the weather pleasant.

A Met official said two weather systems were in play.

There is a trough of low pressure extending from north Bengal to north Chhattisgarh. Another trough is over northwestern parts of India.

“Clouds from both systems travelled towards South Bengal. Some of the more powerful clouds made their way towards Birbhum, Nadia and Murshidabad, where they triggered rain and winds. Relatively weaker clouds came towards Kolkata and its surrounding areas,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.

“Kolkata is very likely to get thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday.”

That would mean stronger gusts of wind and proper rainfall, he said.

“The conditions will not be overcast throughout the day. The sun will make its presence felt in the first half,” said Das.
