Trinamul national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday said that the state government had resolved to make campuses free of ragging.
“We have to ensure a ragging-free campus. This is what the government has pledged. The state government has announced an anti-ragging helpline for students across the state for complaints of ragging at the behest of the chief minister. The number has already been released. If you have any complaint, please call on the number,” Abhishek Banerjee said in his address at the Trinamul Congress Chattra Parishad foundation day rally.
The death of a first-year student of Jadavpur University on August 10 because of alleged ragging prompted the state government to create the anti-ragging helpline.
After the death, Jadavpur University appears to have shaken off years of sloth and announced measures like the installation of CCTV cameras on the campus and at the gates of the hostels in a bid to prevent tragedies such as the boy’s death.
Protests by Left-leaning students’ organisations have begun at JU against the move to install CCTV cameras.
Banerjee, taking a dig at the protesters, said: “Those who move the high court for the smallest of issues and demand CCTV in (polling) booths and inside the interrogation rooms are opposing CCTV on campuses. This is their tradition. ”
