St. Xavier’s College, Park Street, has received approval from the University of Calcutta for starting PhD programmes in Bengali and English.
With two more subjects, the college now offers seven PhD programmes in microbiology, biotechnology, physics, commerce, computer science, Bengali and English.
In a notification on Monday, Father Dominic Savio, the principal of the college, expressed his gratitude to Dr Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, the vice-chancellor of Calcutta University: “We thank the Hon'ble vice-chancellor, Calcutta University for extending her support towards our mission of academic excellence.”
The alumni association of St. Xavier’s College uploaded the notice on Facebook on Monday and thanked Father Dominic Savio for the good news.
“It fills our hearts with pride as Xaverians to inform you all that Reverend Father Dr Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal St. Xavier’s College (autonomous) and the president of the alumni association of St. Xavier’s College, has taken our dear alma mater to yet another great height! …We are grateful to Reverend Father principal for his tireless endeavour in spreading the light of knowledge! Last month, Father Dominic Savio had announced that St. Xavier’s College plans to introduce an integrated programme that will enable students to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD in the same subject with multiple exit points.
The principal had said that the integrated programme will help the college, counted among the top four colleges in a national ranking exercise, draw more bright students.
