Two cars crashed — one on the Parama flyover and the other near Park Circus — in two road accidents early on Saturday.

One person, who was at the wheel of the car that rammed into a lamp post on the Parama flyover, was injured.

The crash happened on the Parama flyover around 1.45am on Saturday when Abhinav Suri, 33, apparently lost control of his vehicle. Suri, a resident of Hazra Road, was taken to a private hospital on Wood Street.

His vehicle was seized. Suri, police said, was later released from the hospital.

The vehicle would undergo a mechanical test to ascertain if it had developed a snag or if the crash was the outcome of a human error.

The second crash happened around two hours later on Circus Avenue near Park Circus when a car apparently lost control and turned over.

The police said the occupants of the car fled but the owner later went to Beniapukur police station where the vehicle was impounded.

“Preliminary inquiry revealed that one of the tyres had got punctured, which may have caused the accident. None of the occupants of the vehicle was injured. The vehicle will undergo a mechanical test,” said an officer.

In both cases, officers of the traffic department said “speeding” was the common problem.

According to statistics from the Kolkata traffic police, more than one-third of all the fatal accidents that happen in the city, occur between 10pm and 6am the next morning.

“This is the general tendency for motorists to speed when the roads are empty. What they do not take into consideration is the condition of the road or if another vehicle is also speeding,” said an inspector-ranked officer.

A few weeks ago, a college student in the rear seat of an SUV driven by one of her friends died in a crash when the vehicle plying along Syed Amir Ali Avenue took a left turn on Gurusaday Dutt Road at an alleged high speed.

The SUV first hit the side railing before colliding with a milk van coming from the opposite direction.
