New Town now has a new spot that Kolkata residents can check out. Thanks to HIDCO and WBSEDCL, a solar dome with solar panels and exhibits on renewable energy has opened its door to the public. The solar dome is located adjacent to Eco Park and visitors to the latter will not be charged for entry.

The 27-metre-high dome has opened just the ground floor for visitors for the time being. There are 2,000 active solar panels fitted on the dome. These panels will be used to generate electricity to power nearby street lights and the dome’s internal lighting as well. The public will be able to access the upper levels once they are opened in due course of time.

Once complete, it will house a planetarium, marine aquarium, gallery and a view point from which the visitors will have a panoramic view of Rajarhat-Newtown. The project cost is estimated to be around Rs 30 crore.
