Partially decomposed bodies of two siblings were found in their rented accommodation in New Town in northeast Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon.
An officer of New Town police station said Abhirup Konch, 20, and his sister Anindita, 30, used to stay at this apartment on the eight floor of the Palamou Cooperative Housing Society in New Town with their mother Mala, 51.
Neighbours alerted the cops after one of them spotted Mala lying unconscious on the seventh floor lobby, the officer said.
The police officer said when they reached the housing complex, Mala was already back at the flat and had locked the front door. “After much coaxing, she opened the main door. Inside, we found the partially decomposed bodies of her children lying in one of the bedrooms. We immediately shifted them to the Bidhannagar sub-divisional hospital,” said the officer.
Arun Kumar Deb, one of the residents of the housing society, said Mala had approached them as well as the security guards on at least twice in the past few days. She would shout “help help” and run back to her flat and shut the door.
“We had even drafted a letter to submit it to the local police station to look into the matter. But before we could do that, this incident took place. They had moved into the flat around a year back. They rarely interacted with us,” said Deb.
A senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said during questioning Mala’s statements seemed incoherent. She was taken to the hospital for a check-up. “We will question her again to find out more details about the deaths,” the officer added.
Both the bodies have been sent for an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of their deaths.
