The second phase of demolition of the Vivekananda Road flyover in north Kolkata, a part of which collapsed in March 2016, will be over in a week and the barricaded portions opened to traffic after necessary road repairs, said officials of Kolkata Municipal Development Authority (KMDA).
The part of the flyover that was razed in the second phase ran over the stretch of Vivekananda Road between Ganesh Talkies and Girish Park. Six piers that were supporting the superstructure were pulled down.
This area is dotted with houses and business establishments. Since end-August, when the second phase of demolition began, residents have had to park their vehicles at designated places away from their houses.
“We will request Kolkata Municipal Corporation to start road repairs immediately so that traffic can resume through the stretches that are now blocked to facilitate the razing of the structure,” said an official of the KMDA, the agency that is supervising the demolition.
The third phase of demolition will involve pulling down the part of the flyover that stands between Ganesh Talkies and Kalakar Street. In the fourth phase, the stretch between Kalakar Street and Posta will be razed.
