The season’s first Nor’wester left around 20 trees uprooted and at least three persons injured.

Uprooted trees crashed on cars and two-wheelers in and around the city. Flight and train services were disrupted.

Police said one person has been admitted to hospital after being injured in a tree crash near Alipore.

Five incoming flights were diverted and the departure of 12 flights were delayed.

Suburban railway services were hit as trees fell on the tracks. Movement of trains in the Sealdah and Sealdah South sections was affected.

Police said traffic was disrupted in the city as trees got uprooted on several roads, including Hospital Road, Hastings Park Road, Hyde Road, Belvedere Road, Sarat Bose Road, Baker Road, Diamond Harbour Road in Alipore, Camac Street, AJC Bose Road-DL Khan Road crossing, Elgin Road, a stretch of Ashutosh Mukherjee Road and Muraripukur Road.

There were long queues of vehicles on most major thoroughfares in the evening, including Central Avenue, Park Street, Sarat Bose Road, Elgin Road and AJC Bose Road.

A tree crashed on a car parked inside the compound of the office of the district magistrate of South 24-Parganas in Alipore, injuring two persons. One of them was admitted to hospital.

A motorcyclist suffered injuries after a tree crashed on him near Red Road, but the police said he did not need hospitalisation. A mother and her child, who were inside an app cab, had a close shave after a tree crashed on the vehicle while it was plying along Hospital Road.

“There were reports of many trees falling across the city. Disaster Management Group teams and civic staff cleared the roads,” said an officer at Lalbazar.

One lamp post along the Parama flyover fell on the road but there were no reports of any injury or damage to vehicles.

Several roads in Salt Lake were partially blocked by branches that fell during the storm. Branches of big trees fell near the Kalyan Jewellers island, a stone’s throw from City Centre, partially blocking the CA island-bound flank of the road.

A tree fell on a road that leads to the petrol pump near tank number 10.

“There were no arrivals or departures at the Kolkata airport between 5.34pm and 6.20pm because of the weather,” said an airport official.

Among the flights diverted were two IndiGo flights from Delhi and Chennai, both of which were redirected to Ranchi. A flight of US-Bangla Airlines that was coming from Dhaka to Kolkata returned to the Bangladesh capital.

Among the 12 flights that could not take off on time were those bound for Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Dhaka, Ranchi, Guwahati, Patna and Raipur, said an airport official.
