A Maruti Suzuki Swift, which was parked on Camac Street, was crushed under a huge tree that got uprooted during the storm.

The owner of the car, a resident of Alipore, said that like other days, he had parked his car outside his workplace.

“I was inside my office when the storm hit. When I came out later, I found huge branches of a tree had fallen on my car and the roof got dented,” he said. “Luckily, I was not inside.”

The car was taken away for repairs later on Tuesday afternoon, he said.

Sonu Poddar, a resident of Madhyamgram in North 24-Parganas, was not as lucky.

Poddar, who owns a Tata Ace and runs a courier service, was sitting inside the car, a few yards from the Maruti Suzuki Swift, when the vehicle overturned after being hit by gusty wind.

“I was on Camac Street to make a delivery. I was taking a break and sipping tea when suddenly the storm started. I ran inside my vehicle thinking it would be safe there. A few seconds later, there was a gusty wind and my vehicle overturned,” Poddar told The Telegraph.

He said police and people in the vicinity helped him out of the vehicle. A traffic sergeant who was at the spot said no one was injured, although several trees got uprooted and crashed on cars on Camac Street.

On Hospital Road, in the Maidan area, an app cab and a motorcycle got trapped under a huge tree that got uprooted during the nor’wester.

“A mother and her child were in the app cab. They were unhurt as they were brought out of the car in time. The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries,” said an officer of Maidan police station.

“A Nissan Micra that was parked on Kyd Street was damaged. and so was an app cab on Paikpara Road, near Dum Dum,” said an officer of the traffic department.

Prabir Halder, a resident of Chitpore who owns the app cab, said his car was parked outside the garage. No one was inside.

“There was no passenger inside when a tree crashed on it,” he said.

A car parked in the compound of the office of South 24-Parganas in Alipore was damaged after an uprooted tree fell on it. No one was injured.

Several trees along Hospital Road and in the Maidan area got uprooted or broke off from the middle. Some of them crashed on vehicles and a railing along Red Road.
