A two-member bench of the National Green Tribunal on Monday asked the Sealdah station authorities to inform it within two weeks about the setting up a of sewage treatment plant and finalise a solar installation.
Since 2017, the tribunal has passed several directives on both Sealdah and Howrah station authorities to improve environmental conditions.
The order, passed by the bench consisting of Justice B. Amit Sthalekar and expert member Saibal Dasgupta on November 15, was based on inspection reports shared by the state pollution control board.
“In the inspection report, it is mentioned that the Eastern Railway shall establish a new STP (sewage treatment plant) capacity of 0.7MLD (million litres per day) at Sealdah Railway Station but no timeline has been given ...,” reads the order.
As for Howrah station, the PCB report has given a clean chit to the railway authorities, which was challenged by petitioner Subhas Datta.
The bench directed the railway and the PCB to file an affidavit in response to Datta’s complaint. The case is expected to come up for hearing on January 3, 2022.
