A 41-year-old scooterist riding with a helmet on but the chin strap unfastened was killed in an accident near the Technopolis intersection in Sector V on Wednesday morning.
Laltu Baidya, who hails from Howrah, was headed to New Town from Sector V when his scooter skidded and his head hit the rear wheel of a passing bus.
An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate’s traffic wing said Baidya lost control of his scooter while turning right towards the New Town bus stand. As Baidya fell on the road his head hit the rear wheel of a bus. The driver of the bus did not stop the vehicle though passers by had alerted him, the officer added.
Traffic policemen posted at the crossing immediately called in an ambulance and he was taken to the Bidhannagar sub-divisional hospital in Salt Lake. “He was not conscious and had lost a lot of blood from a head injury. We could not revive him,” a doctor said.
The cops later tracked down the bus driver and arrested him.
A sizeable section of two-wheeler riders use helmets on but with the chin straps unclipped. “Had the helmet been properly strapped on, the man could have been saved,” said a police officer.
