Scooterist dies after two-wheeler was hit by a vehicle on Alipore Road

Police identified scooterist as Jagdish Mahato, 40, who was declared dead at SSKM Hospital

A scooterist died after the two-wheeler was hit by a vehicle on Alipore Road on Monday night. The pillion-rider was injured.

Police identified the scooterist as Jagdish Mahato, 40, who was declared dead at SSKM Hospital. Rajib Shome, the pillion-rider, was discharged from the hospital after treatment.

The vehicle that hit the scooter could not be identified till late on Tuesday evening, the police said.

“The crash happened near Command Hospital on Alipore Road around 10.35pm on Monday. The scooterist and the pillion-rider were flung off the vehicle,” said an officer at Alipore police station.

Both Mahato and Shome were wearing helmets, the police said.

Mahato, who was originally from Jharkhand, and Shome were returning to Kulupara in Kasba.

A case of rash and negligent driving, mischief and causing death due to negligence has been started by Alipore police station.

The case was later handed over to the fatal squad of the traffic department of Kolkata police. “We are trying to identify the vehicle by scanning footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area," an officer said.

The police said they were seeking help from Shome to identify the vehicle.

Accident

A 10-year-old was injured after she fell off a scooter after the two-wheeler was allegedly hit by a car on Akra Road in Rajabagan on Tuesday morning. According to police, Ayesha Khatun, a resident of SA Farooqui Road in Akra, was treated at a private hospital. The driver of the car has been arrested.
