Arijit Roy, 31, a resident of Bediadanga Second Lane, received multiple injuries and was taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.

Officers of Kasba traffic guard said CCTV analysis of the stretch showed that there were no other vehicles in the area at the time of the accident.

The scooterist was wearing a helmet, the police said.

“It appears that the rider lost control and the scooter skidded on the road. We have sent the vehicle for tests to ascertain if the two-wheeler had developed any snag or was it the fault of the rider,” said an officer.

Sources said the fatal squad of the traffic police would take up the investigation of the accident.

Officers said motorists tend to speed up when they see a stretch empty. According to police records a large number of accidents in Kolkata happen during night and most of them involve two-wheelers.
