The woman whose allegation of gang rape led to the arrest of Shib Prasad Hazra, a Trinamul leader in Sandeshkhali in North 24-Parganas, alleged on Sunday that her house had been ransacked by men wearing what appeared to her as “police uniform”.

The woman told TV channels that she was not at home when the men barged in on Saturday night, hours after Hazra had been rounded up based on her complaint.

The men, who allegedly introduced themselves as policemen and were intoxicated, threatened her family and ransacked her house, she said.

“I think they were cops. They were wearing police-like uniforms and were all drunk. They threatened my father-in-law. They would have killed me had I been there. I was not at home when they came,” the woman alleged.

On learning about the attack on her house, she called up Sandeshkhali police station and was told that cops had been sent to guard her house, she said.

The woman further said she suspected that the police were acting at the behest of the arrested Trinamul leader.

Officers of the Basirhat police district, under which Sandeshkhali police station functions, denied the allegations and said they were trying to ascertain the
identity of the men who reportedly went to the woman’s house.

Hossain Mehedi Rehman, superintendent of police, Basirhat, did not answer calls or respond to text messages from The Telegraph on Sunday evening seeking his comments on the allegations made by the woman.

Sources said a team of officers went to the woman’s house to record her statements on the alleged attack on her house. The sources said she refused to lodge a complaint regarding the incident.

Text messages from this newspaper to the woman’s phone on Sunday did not yield any response. Calls made to her phone were either diverted to another number or her phone was switched off.

A senior police officer said: “We will probe the allegations and try to find out who went to her house on Saturday night. But we need her help to know more details about the suspects.”

Earlier this month, the woman had complained against Hazra and another Trinamul leader, Uttam Sardar. Based on that complaint, both were charged with outrage of modesty, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and common intention.

Last week, she recorded her statement before a magistrate under Section 164
CrPC. Based on what she said, the rape was slapped on Hazra.
