Individuals with no hands were provided with prosthetic implants that would make them less dependent on others.
Saksham, an initiative by Rotary International District 3291, provided 50 artificial limbs free of cost to individuals in need at Rotary Sadan on Saturday.
The project that started a few years back has so far provided 600 hands. In August, 1,000 legs were provided.
“We would like to serve in a way that would change the life of a person. If a person gets a limb, it makes him or her less dependent on others. He or she does not have to wait for a family member to get their chores done,” said Prabir Chatterjee, the district governor of Rotary International District 3291.
Police commissioner Soumen Mitra and Chatterjee presided over the event.
Chatterjee said that helping one individual meant helping one family because it relieves family members from some of their duties like helping a person eat, change or at times, take them from one place to another.
“With a prosthetic implant, the person does not have to wait for others,” he said.
The selection of the beneficiaries is done by the registered NGOs called the Rotary Community Cops who work in association with the Rotary Clubs.
“We have 167 Rotary Clubs and the Rotary Community Cops are our extended arms that help us implement the projects that we intend to do by helping us identify the beneficiaries,” he said.
Saturday’s camp was organised by the Rotary Club of Calcutta Presidency, whose members have developed the in-house capacity to fit such hands, assisted by young volunteers.
