A man in his late-twenties has been arrested for allegedly stealing the wallet and cellphone of an app-cab driver after spiking his tea earlier this month.
Pushpak Roy, 29, a resident of Dum Dum was picked up from near his house based on a complaint lodged by the driver, an officer of Lake Town police station.
Roy, who was accompanied by a female friend, had booked the cab on rental from Bangur Avenue in northeast Kolkata for five hours.
“Roy asked the driver to head towards City Centre. Once they were near the shopping mall Roy offered him tea,” an officer said,
After the tea break, Roy told him to drive towards Prinsep Ghat, the officer added.
“According to the driver, the next thing he remembers is his son sprinkling water on his face while he was lying on the rear seat. When they searched the car they discovered that a cellphone and wallet were missing.”
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said Roy doesn’t have any criminal antecedents. “He told us that he was in desperate need of money.”
The cops have recovered the stolen cellphone.
