Residents of a couple of buildings in Bowbazar have been asked to evacuate their homes for a week because their houses fell in the "influence zone" of an under-construction evacuation shaft at the East-West Metro site.

A June 12 notice from the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, the executing agency of the project, served on the residents of the buildings on 6 Durga Pituri Lane and 9 Durga Pituri Lane, had asked them to evacuate the premises by Tuesday morning.

A KMRC official told The Telegraph on Tuesday that the "evacuation process has been delayed and a decision on when to shift the residents will be taken on Wednesday".

"The construction of egress shaft in Bowbazar is now in progress and premises .... is situated within influence zone of this work. As a measure of precaution, the residents of premises... are hereby requested not to stay at their premises," the notice said.

The residents were asked not to stay at their homes from 10am on June 13 to 4pm on June 19. The agency has arranged hotel accommodation for the residents, the notice said.

The 16.5km East-West Metro project, which will connect Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V once fully operational, is now functional between Sealdah and Sector V.

The KMRC is eying a December deadline to start services between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade.

Trial runs are now underway in the stretch, including a section under the Hooghly

But the 2.5km stretch between Esplanade and Sealdah remains a challenge.
