A water reservoir will be built under Marcus Square in northwest Kolkata and made operational before the repairs of the underground water reservoir at Mohammad Ali Park in the city’s central part starts, mayor Firhad Hakim said on Saturday.

Water supply to entire central Kolkata will come to a halt if the water reservoir under the Mohammad Ali Park stops storing water, Hakim said. Water from the Tallah water tank comes to the Mohammad Ali Park water reservoir. From here the water is supplied to the entire central Kolkata, said a senior KMC official.

The new water reservoir will have the capacity to store 4 million gallons of water — similar to the reservoir under Mohammad Ali Park — and will come up on a 10 cottah land inside Marcus Square, added the official.

Hakim’s statement came in the backdrop of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) not allowing the organisers of the Mohammad Ali Park Durga Puja to go ahead with the construction of the Durga Puja pandal inside the park. The Telegraph had reported on August 11 that organisers of the Durga Puja had started to erect the pandal inside the park.
