A man was stuck between a “concrete wall” and the “gate” of an elevator on the sixth floor of the Alipore treasury building for at least an hour on Wednesday, police said.

Safiuddin Mollah, 45, was eventually rescued by the disaster management team of Calcutta police and fire brigade personnel.

He has suffered a fracture in the right femur bone and is being treated at SSKM Hospital, the police said.

A video clip, which appears to have been taken from inside the lift, shows a part of a leg — downward from the knee — of a person hanging from what looks like the headroom of the elevator.

The display console of the lift shows the elevator was headed to the ninth floor. The person is seen wearing white footwear.

A man inside briefly tries to pull the leg. Another is seen trying to look through the window of the lift car to alert people. A third is seen recording with his phone.

The incident took place around 1.30pm.

The circumstances under which Mollah, a resident of Bishnupur in South-24 Parganas, got stuck were not immediately clear.

A police source said Mollah was stepping out of the lift on the sixth floor when the incident took place.

Metro shared the clip with an electrical engineer who deals with elevators for a government organisation.

“It appears the man tried to stop the closing doors of the elevator by pushing his leg in between. It could have been fatal. The leg could have been severed,” he said.

The police said Mollah was “associated” with an educational institute in South 24-Parganas.
