The teachers from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, held remedial classes for students of other schools to plug their learning gaps before they write the Madhyamik examinations next month.

More than 150 students, who study in 35-odd schools within the seven-kilometre radius of the Vidyalaya, attended the classes on the RKM campus over the past two days from Monday.

Jayanta Das, a teacher of English at the Vidyalaya, said it emerged from the classes that the writing skill and comprehension abilities of the students have been adversely affected.

The attending students were those who missed their in-person classes in 2021 when they were in Class IX because of the pandemic-induced shutdown of the campuses.

When they were promoted to Class-X last year, the in-person classes started on February 16. “Overall they are unable to concentrate on the text. Somehow during the online classes held following the absence of physical classes, they did not get a chance to practice. What we did is to advise them to focus on the presentation of the scripts. We advised them to focus on grammar while writing,” said Das.

He said the students have been alerted about the questions where an introductory sentence has to be used while answering.

“Students were guided so they could fathom where the single paragraph, double paragraph or triple paragraph has to be used while answering questions. They must write the story in the past sentence,” he said.

A student of Swami Pranabananda Vidyapith, Tollygunge, said the gaps are more glaring in the science subjects that involve concept-building.

“We did not have in-person classes in Class-IX and the online classes were not enough to plug the gaps. The extended summer vacation last year, when we were promoted to Class X, did not help matters. There seems to be an information gap in science subjects that involve concept building,” said Kankana Roy, a student of Class X.

“The remedial classes helped us in clearing the doubts and reducing the information gap,” said Kankana.
