Humility, humanity, clarity of communication and pursuit of passion are the traits that make a great leader.

These are also the qualities that most recipients spoke about at an awards night for business leaders and management professionals on Saturday.

The Healthworld Hospitals presents CMA Management Excellence Awards 2022 in association with Fairfield By Marriott Calcutta and The Telegraph was held at Fairfield by Marriott in New Town on Saturday.

Arunangshu Ganguly, the chairman of Healthworld Hospitals, told the audience about the need for trained personnel in hospital management. “Today’s hospital management courses are an extension of hospitality management courses. We need to have fully groomed management professionals to run hospitals,” said Ganguly, a cardiologist.

A performance by The Big Other, an “acoustic danced music ensemble” set the tone for the show, hosted by Jimmy Tangree.

There were nine recipients of seven awards. The two categories — business leadership award and corporate leadership award — had two recipients. The former is given to owners of businesses and companies while the latter is handed over to senior leadership of companies.

The loudest applause from the audience came when Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty was handed over the Institutional Excellence Award. Chakrabarty called himself “a tiny student of music”.

Debu Bhattacharya, a former vice-chairman of Hindalco, was on Zoom call from Mumbai. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He said the execution was sometimes more important than formulations of strategy. “Management literature gives more stress on strategy formulation but the execution is as important, if not more, as strategy formulation.”

T.V.S. Shenoy, the president of Calcutta Management Association (CMA) and the chief commercial officer (long products) at Tata Steel, spoke about the three traits that all recipients spoke about in the acceptance speech.

“Humility, humanity, the pursuit of passion and clear communication are the traits of a great leader. This is what came across after hearing all the recipients of the awards,” he said in the vote of thanks.

Rajarhat drains

All sewerage lines that were laid many years ago will also be replaced as part of the project, the official said.

Till date, areas in Rajarhat, Gopalpur, Arjunpur and Gopalpur have open drains and channels for draining out rainwater.

The civic body is largely dependent on labourers to clear drains when they get clogged.

During rains, most of these areas get flooded because there has been a spike in the number of houses and housing complexes in these places.

The sewerage lines are operating well beyond their specified capacity as these areas are witnessing a construction boom over the past several years, an official of the civic body’s sewerage and drainage department said.
